New IN-HOUSE Laminated bus bar capability for Critical Customer Partners

Starting in Q2, 2019, SBE is adding a new IN-HOUSE laminated bus bar capability to support advanced cap-bus designs for critical customer partners. Depending on a customer’s design cycle, the SBE application engineering team may choose to utilize this capability for future prototype projects.

The laminated bus bar supplier market has seen quite a change over the past 24 months. A number of very capable players have formally exited the business, have sharply reduced their engineering focus in this area, or have lengthened lead times to 12 – 25 weeks even for critical prototype validation orders. This is just not acceptable for programs that need to quickly establish feasibility and baseline performance goals. Additionally, SBE’s industry leading and unique “Integrated Cap/Bus” design approach makes the partnership between SBE and the bus supplier extremely critical.

While SBE still maintains excellent relationships with the industry’s top laminated bus suppliers and will continue to look to them for high volume production, the decision was made in early 2019 to start up our own prototype bus bar line to support our critical customers.

Starting in late 2nd quarter 2019, we expect the complete turn-around time for a fully laminated and integrated cap /bus to be 4 – 6 weeks (4 weeks or less for the custom bus bar and 2 weeks to assemble the integrated capacitor). These bus / cap designs have already proven to be the industry’s highest power density and lowest inductance systems. Now with this new in house capability, SBE will deliver that critical first validation prototype when needed.

Please stop by the SBE APEC booth 930 to talk to one of our application engineers. If you are not attending APEC, feel free to contact Mike Brubaker, SBE Chief Technology Officer, to discuss if your application can use this new capability to make your program a success.
